Balearic Marine Cluster highlights the connection between tradition and innovation in nautical training with a visit to master shipwright Joan Cifre’s workshop
Students on the Rigging and Sails course, promoted by Balearic Marine Cluster in collaboration with the S’Algar Training Center, made an educational visit to the workshop of master shipwright Joan Cifre in Portocolom. The activity gave students an insight into the traditional construction and restoration of boats, an essential craft in the Balearic maritime heritage that continues to thrive thanks to professionals such as Cifre.
This visit forms part of the dual training programme, which currently involves 25 students undertaking a three-month training period to prepare for entry into the nautical sector in areas such as the manufacture, maintenance and repair of sails and rigging for yachts and superyachts. The dual training programmes are funded by SOIB with the participation of SEPE, enabling the delivery of high-quality training pathways tailored to the real needs of the labour market.
Balearic Marine Cluster, in collaboration with the S’Algar Training Centre, works on the design and development of training pathways that bring students closer to the professional reality of the sector, facilitating connections between specialised companies and future talent. The course, which began last October, combines theoretical training with placements in cluster member companies, ensuring solid preparation focused on employability.
Activities such as the visit to Joan Cifre’s workshop highlight the importance of integrating traditional techniques into modern nautical training, strengthening the link between the maritime history of the Balearic Islands and the innovative future of the sector.
Balearic Marine Cluster reaffirms its commitment to specialised training, generational renewal and the development of the talent needed to continue consolidating the Balearic Islands as an international benchmark in the nautical industry.
