The event brought together companies, institutions, and organizations from the industry to move toward a more sustainable maritime model aligned with waste prevention
Balearic Marine Cluster took part in the “Marine: Zero Waste Business” event, organized by Rezero and the Mission Zero Academy (MiZA). The meeting highlighted the Balearic yachting industry’s commitment to sustainability and the need to implement measures to prevent waste generation and reduce the environmental impact of maritime activities.
During the round table, Lucía Mingot, representative of Balearic Marine Cluster and Director of Quality, Innovation and Sustainability at Astilleros de Mallorca, emphasized the importance of advancing toward “scientific sustainability,” based on data and key performance indicators (KPIs) that allow for measuring the real impact of the sector and setting specific improvement goals. She also highlighted the work being carried out by the Cluster through its SDG Guide for the Balearic nautical sector, which promotes actions such as reducing single-use products and measuring the percentage of plastic reduction achieved.

The session presented the results of a survey conducted among maritime companies in the Balearic Islands, revealing that one out of every two companies already incorporate waste prevention into their operations, although the sector calls for more tools, collaboration, and public support to make further progress.
The event concluded with the presentation of the Zero Waste Business certification system, promoted by MiZA, which will include a specific module for the nautical sector within the Marine-ZWB project, co-funded by BeMed. This framework will enable companies to measure and enhance their alignment with circular economy principles and waste prevention.
Through its participation in this event, Balearic Marine Cluster continues to foster sustainability and cross-sector collaboration, promoting an innovative and responsible Balearic yachting industry aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
