This project, funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU, has been developed in collaboration with industry companies and supported by SOIB and the National Nautical Reference Centre
Balearic Marine Cluster has completed the development of a total of 30 official training specialisations in the nautical sector as part of a project led by SOIB (Servei d’Ocupació de les Illes Balears) and funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU. The initiative has received technical support from the National Nautical Reference Centre, Centre de la Mar, and the active involvement of more than 40 companies from the Balearic Islands’ industrial network.
The project includes the creation of 24 new specialisations and the revision of 6 existing ones, with the aim of updating the sector’s training catalogue and aligning it with the real needs of the labour market. The specialisations cover areas such as electric propulsion, marine electronics, sailmaking and upholstery, carpentry, mechanical maintenance, hydraulic systems, air conditioning and yacht painting, among others.
Throughout its development, more than 60 technical meetings were held with specialised companies from the Balearics, which helped define the content of each specialisation from a practical perspective, focused on employability and aligned with the sector’s ongoing technological and environmental transformation.
“The future of the nautical sector depends on having qualified professionals and training programmes adapted to the new professional profiles. With this project, we’re taking a decisive step towards securing generational renewal and improving the competitiveness of our companies. It’s the result of a year of work alongside businesses and public institutions to ensure the nautical sector finally has a training offer tailored to its real needs. This provides a solid foundation for building skilled talent and strengthening the future of our industry,” stated Miquel López, Project Manager at Balearic Marine Cluster.
López has led every phase of the project with dedication and commitment — from technical planning to validation with SOIB — coordinating companies, sector experts and public administrations to ensure a useful, operational result aligned with the sustainable growth model promoted by the cluster.
The SOIB has included the newly created specialisations in the SEPE Catalogue of Training Specialisations, which means they can be delivered across Spain within the framework of Work-Based Training. This will allow public and private training centres and institutions to offer them in the coming months, expanding opportunities for employment and specialised technical training in the Balearic Islands.
Balearic Marine Cluster highlights that this project represents not only an improvement in the training offer, but also a direct-impact strategy to boost employability, grow the auxiliary sector, and position the Balearic Islands as a benchmark in high-value nautical services.
The cluster thanks SOIB for its initiative and trust in leading the technical development of a project that is key to the future of employment and professional qualifications in the nautical industry.
