ENERGY COMMUNITIES IN MARINAS IN THE BALEARIC ISLANDS
PROJECT INFORMATION:
Balearic Marine Cluster presents the Marinas Azules project, a technical and environmental feasibility study proposing an innovative, self-sufficient and circular desalination system to supply fresh water to nautical and marina facilities in the Balearic Islands.
The project, funded by AETIB – Agència d’Estratègia Turística de les Illes Balears and developed with the support of Garau Ingenieros, assesses the implementation of solar-powered desalination plants capable of covering 100% of each facility’s fresh water needs without increasing its carbon footprint.
OBJECTIVES:
Assess the technical and environmental feasibility of a circular and sustainable desalination system.
Provide replicable solutions to the water-related challenges faced by island territories such as the Balearic Islands.
Promote energy self-sufficiency in nautical and marina facilities.
Advance the ecological transition of the nautical sector through circular and responsible projects.
METHODOLOGY:
Presentation of the feasibility study results to key marinas and shipyards: Alcudiamar, Astilleros de Mallorca, Club Náutico Cala Gamba, Port Adriano, Marina Port de Mallorca and Marina Santa Eulalia.
Pilot testing at Marina Santa Eulàlia, Alcudiamar and Marina Menorca.
Organisation of further meetings with institutional representatives such as UIB, ANADE, FANMED, Ports de Balears, the Association of Nautical Clubs of the Balearic Islands and ADR Balears.
Preparation of specific reports for each facility, confirming the technical feasibility of the proposed model.
Validation of the scalability of the circular desalination system, adaptable to different types of infrastructure.
Dissemination of the results, with the feasibility report available to all nautical and marina facilities interested in implementing the system.
BENEFICIARIES:
Nautical and marina facilities and shipyards in the Balearic Islands that implement the self-sufficient desalination system.
Companies linked to the sector that participate in the development and implementation of sustainable solutions.
The wider Balearic nautical ecosystem, progressing towards a more responsible and circular model aligned with the ecological transition.
The project was nominated for the Blue Wake Awards at the Monaco Yacht Show 2025.
PROJECT FUNDED BY:
The European Union through the Recovery and Resilience Facility – NextGenerationEU, and the Conselleria de Turisme, Cultura i Esports through the Direcció General de Turisme.
