Balearic Marine Cluster has launched the presentation tour of the Marinas Azules project, a technical and environmental feasibility study proposing an innovative system for self-sufficient and circular desalination to supply fresh water to nautical facilities across the Balearic Islands.

The findings are going to be shared with marinas and shipyards including Alcudiamar Marina Resort, Astilleros de Mallorca, Marina Cala Gamba, Port Adriano, Marina Port de Mallorca, and Marina Santa Eulalia. In the coming days, meetings are also scheduled with Marina Ibiza, as well as institutional stakeholders from the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), ANADE, FANMED, Ports de Balears, the Association of Nautical Clubs of the Balearic Islands, and the ADR Balears, among other key players in the Balearic nautical ecosystem.

The project, funded by the AETIB – Balearic Islands Tourism Strategy Agency, is designed to assess the implementation of a system based on solar-powered desalination units capable of meeting 100% of each facility’s freshwater needs without increasing its carbon footprint.

A scalable, sustainable solution for the blue economy

The reports prepared for each marina, thanks to Garau Ingenieros, confirm the technical viability of the model, regardless of the type of facility —from shipyards to marinas of various sizes—, reinforcing the scalability and adaptability of the proposed system.

This approach not only enables energy self-sufficiency but also offers a real, replicable solution to the freshwater challenges faced by island territories like the Balearics, where responsible water use is a pressing priority.

A shared commitment to a more responsible yachting sector

The Marinas Azules project forms part of the cluster’s strategy to promote the green transition of the yachting industry and has received active support from numerous public and private entities, all of which have shown strong interest in implementing circular and sustainable solutions at their facilities.

Balearic Marine Cluster is grateful for the enthusiasm and engagement of all companies and institutions visited, and invites other marinas and nautical installations to join the project. The feasibility report is available on request for those interested in assessing its potential application.
