Astilleros de Mallorca and Alcudiamar, BMC members, take part in the event held in Palma, focused on the role of clusters in driving the circular economy

Balearic Marine Cluster participated in the European event Clusters Meet Regions, held on May 14 and 15 at ParcBit in Palma. The event brought together institutional representatives, experts and clusters from all over Europe with the aim of fostering regional cooperation and advancing toward a more circular, innovative and sustainable economy.

Member companies of the cluster also took part in this international gathering, such as Astilleros de Mallorca, represented by its Head of Quality, Innovation and Sustainability, Lucía Mingot, who shared one of the Balearic nautical sector’s most prominent success stories. Alcudiamar was also present, represented by Mar Vera, who participated in the panel on green infrastructure, highlighting the role of marinas in urban regeneration, ecological connectivity and energy efficiency.

The cluster as a connector, facilitator and driver of transformation

The Clusters Meet Regions event highlighted the fundamental role of clusters. As a cohesive force within the Balearic yachting sector, Balearic Marine Cluster works actively to promote job creation, drive innovation and support the transition toward a more sustainable production model.

“Our role is not only to represent, but to facilitate, align and energise. The work we do at the cluster connects companies with real opportunities in sustainability, training, digitalisation and international cooperation. We are committed to a competitive yachting industry that creates value for people and the territory,” said Guillermo García, President of Balearic Marine Cluster, who attended the event together with Pedro Suasi, General Manager of the Cluster.

“The cluster has promoted and coordinated the participation of its member companies in this event, enhancing their visibility and reinforcing the Balearic Islands’ position as a Mediterranean leader in blue and circular economy,” added Suasi, who also stated, “The Balearic Islands have a unique yachting ecosystem. Participating in this forum has been an opportunity to showcase all the work our companies are doing in sustainability, digitalisation and territorial collaboration.”

Clusters with territorial impact

During the institutional opening, Antoni Costa, Vice President and Minister of Economy, Finance and Innovation, highlighted the essential role clusters play in energising the business network, promoting innovation projects, supporting internationalisation and building a more resilient regional economy. He also acknowledged the recent designation of the Balearic Islands as a “Region of Innovation” within the framework of the European Regional Innovation Valleys programme.

For her part, Marta Batalla Massana, Policy Officer at the European Commission (DG GROW), emphasised that initiatives such as Clusters Meet Regions help create connections between regions, share best practices and support business growth and circularity within the European production model through collaborative ecosystems.

A closing with future vision

The event concluded on Thursday with a technical visit to the facilities of Astilleros de Mallorca, recognised as a pioneering company in the implementation of environmental standards in the yachting sector. This visit reflects Europe’s growing interest in seeing real, on-site examples of circularity and ecological transition applied to the industrial sphere.
