Around 40 boats will participate in this legendary organised competition that celebrates its 29th anniversary and adds a fourth day of regattas for the first time
Balearic Marine Cluster (BMC) celebrates that the new edition of the Illes Balears Clàssics Regatta, organised by Club de Mar–Mallorca, is in “good health” and extends its competition days for one more day, reaching four days of regattas for the first time.
This competition, in which sports sailing and the dissemination of maritime heritage go hand in hand, is taking place this year 2024 between 14 and 18 August and has become the reference for the arrival of the classic boat fleet to the Balearic Islands after its 29 years of existence.
For Pedro Suasi, manager of BMC, “the fact that this event has been extended for the first time to four days of regattas shows that nautical competitions are becoming increasingly important in our sea. The Balearic Islands are becoming a benchmark in the Mediterranean for this type of sporting event and specifically for this type of regattas.”
Data from the Illes Balears Clàssics
The number of entries for the regatta, just over a few weeks from its start, is close to 40 boats entered, a number that, due to the popularity of the competition, already exceeds that of last year. Furthermore, the Club de Mar–Mallorca competition has become one of the six events that form part of the select Mediterranean Champions Cup circuit this year.
For the first time in its history, the Illes Balears Clàssics, which has new sponsors thanks to Mallorca Heritage and Nautipaints Group, will have four days of competition. One more day of excitement that the organisation has decided to add at the request of the owners themselves who want to enjoy one more day of racing in the magnificent setting of the Bay of Palma.
Another of the novelties that the Club de Mar–Mallorca regatta brings this year is the competition of a coastal regatta, longer than the usual baton races in which the boats will have the opportunity to compete for victory over a course of more miles.
On the other hand, the competition will also serve to celebrate the Balear’s 100th anniversary. This traditional trawler with a lateen rig launched in 1924 at the Ballester Shipyards in Palma will also join the classic sailing festival. The Mestres d’aixa workshop of the Consell de Mallorca managed to recover this wonderful example of the Balearic maritime heritage for sailing.
