Pedro Suasi, manager of BMC, and Alfredo Fuster, president of ADN Mediterráneo, have agreed this week to launch this initiative as part of the water circularity project promoted by the Balearic Marine Cluster.

Pedro Suasi, manager of Balearic Marine Cluster, and Alfredo Fuster, president of ADN Mediterráneo, agreed to jointly create and distribute a best practice guide for water management, as part of the water circularity project that BMC is developing.

It is worth noting that this water circularity project aims to implement a circular water cycle system by installing zero-emission private desalination plants in Balearic sports marinas. Suasi explained, “At Balearic Marine Cluster, we will create a best practice guide on water use, to be distributed across all sectors, including the navigation sector. We know that even though we are reusing water, it is not a free service, and it is also a scarce resource; therefore, we must be cautious in its use.”

“This initiative will be another step in the development of the circularity project that we are promoting at Balearic Marine Cluster,” he added. “I want to remind you that, with the help of the main marinas in the Balearic Islands, our goal is to find a viable technical solution that reduces the pressure on local water resources and ensures a sustainable water supply. Once we have this water, it is important to use it correctly and responsibly, which is why we will implement these best practices guide that should reach all levels,” Suasi pointed out.

The BMC manager also highlighted that “at the Cluster, we are aware that a project like this will have a positive impact on Balearic society, as not only will the participating marinas or the nautical sector benefit, but it will also impact the local population of the Balearic Islands, as these actions are in defense of the environment and improve water use. Therefore, I appreciate ADN Mediterráneo’s willingness to bring this guide to their sector and help us become more efficient and sustainable,” added Suasi.

For his part, the president of ADN Mediterráneo, Alfredo Fuster, noted that “the creation and distribution of this guide is a first step in the collaboration between ADN Mediterráneo and BMC. We will continue to collaborate for the good of the Balearic citizens and for the proper management of such a limited resource as water.”

The Project

The water circularity project aims to conduct a technical feasibility study in collaboration with the main marinas in the Balearic Islands for the installation and use of private desalination plants dedicated to washing boats.

The steps that Balearic Marine Cluster is following are: Meetings with the involved marinas to assess specific needs, identify limitations, and analyze economic aspects. Additionally, it focuses on searching for and analyzing equipment to promote research and analysis of available desalination options on the market to later conduct an implementation study.

Furthermore, a resource analysis is conducted to assess the energy needs of the desalination plants and propose renewable energy alternatives to minimize the carbon footprint. A waste analysis will also be carried out to determine the amount of waste generated and propose circularity alternatives within the marina.

It is worth mentioning that this project has been submitted by the Balearic Marine Cluster to the call for grants for financing innovative projects through cooperation, to seek, implement, and digitize sustainable innovative solutions in tourist establishments in the Balearic Islands, funded by the EU Next Generation EU.

Among the collaborating entities supporting this project are Club de Mar, Alcudiamar, Port Adriano, Marina Botafoc, Marina Port de Mallorca, Marina Palma Cuarentena, Marina Ibiza, Marina Port Ibiza, Marina Port Mahón, and Astilleros de Mallorca.

Additionally, it has received letters of support from the Directorate General of Water Resources, Balearic Port Authority, ADR Balears, University of the Balearic Islands, Association of Nautical Sports Facilities of the Balearic Islands, Association of Nautical Clubs of the Balearic Islands, Fanmed, Alcudiamar, Ocibar, Marina Palma Cuarentena, Marina Port de Mallorca, Club de Mar, Marina Ibiza, Astilleros de Mallorca, and Garau Ingenieros.
