This index, specifically designed for the Refit sector, promotes continuous improvement in eight key areas: Human Resources, Digitalization, Sustainability, Quality, Safety, Strategy, New Markets, and Innovation.

In November, Balearic Marine Cluster (BMC) launched the “BMC Competitiveness Index for Refit Companies,” an innovative evaluation system aimed at supporting ship repair and maintenance companies in the Balearic Islands on their journey toward operational and business excellence. This index, tailored to the Refit sector, seeks to promote continuous improvement in eight fundamental areas: Human Resources, Digitalization, Sustainability, Quality, Safety, Strategy, New Markets, and Innovation.

According to Pedro Suasi, manager of Balearic Marine Cluster, “This competitiveness index is a key tool that will allow companies to assess and strengthen their processes. In an increasingly competitive market, having a benchmark system that drives excellence in each operational area makes a significant difference.” Suasi also highlighted the importance of this project for the Refit industry in the Balearic Islands, ensuring that this index will position local companies as leaders in quality and competitiveness.

The competitiveness index is obtained through an auditing process led by the BMC team. During this audit, auditors review each control point with the company to ensure the validity of the information provided and, ultimately, to grant the competitiveness certificate, which is valid for 12 months. Participating companies receive a detailed report with results and areas for improvement, as well as a competitiveness seal that they can use in their business relationships and digital platforms, showcasing their commitment to excellence.

The audited companies can aim for three certification levels:

  • Gold Label: For companies that reach or exceed 80% of the index.
  • Silver Label: For companies between 60% and 79.9%.
  • Bronze Label: For companies with scores between 50% and 59.9%.

This process, free for BMC members and available to other companies in the sector for an affordable fee, ensures that the index is an inclusive and accessible tool to foster competitiveness across the industry.

With this initiative, Balearic Marine Cluster not only supports the improvement of each individual company but also aims to raise the quality standards of the entire Refit industry in the region. In addition to the index, BMC will conduct benchmarking studies that will allow companies to understand their market position and adjust their strategies for continuous improvement. “The goal is for Refit companies in the Balearic Islands to lead the sector, setting standards of quality and sustainability that stand out within the industry,” adds Suasi.

Balearic Marine Cluster reaffirms its commitment to the sustainable growth and professionalization of the Balearic maritime industry, laying the foundation for a stronger and more competitive maritime economy.
